Education

Ceylon Christian Care provides the following kinds of education in the Tamil area of Sri Lanka:

· Primary Education

· Vocational Training

Micro Credits

The youth who has finished a vocational training with good results get the opportunity to receive a small loan (micro credit) to purchase tools or a sewing machine. This loan they can pay back in 1 to 3 years time (depends of the size of the oan).

With these tools or sewing machne they can start working and earning money for themselves and their families. Almost 100% of al students make use of this opportunity. We have good results with the paybacks of the loans.

Vocational Training

On Sri Lanka there are no public vocational training facilities. Children only get education on the public primary schools up to the age of 17 years. On these schools they get only theoretical training. Most of them leave this school without a certificate.

It is important that these training receive vocational training after they leave the school. Together with Rev Jeyanesan we have started a number of vocational trainings in the villages. Each training takes 1 year and exists for 30% of theory and for 70 % of practical education.

At this moment we support the following trainings in the villages:

- Sewing for girls

- Electronic wiring and plumbing for boys

We research other study directions.

For other vocational study directions children can make use of the large and modern equipped VTC in Batticaloa. This VTC has 14 study directions. Each year over 200 students are trained. This center is setup and sponsored by “Kinder Not Hilfe” from Germany and “Woord en Daad” from the Netherlands. For more information about this training center, see also “Woord en Daad”.

NOTE:

John’s Academy, the Christian English Medium school in Batticaloa, will integrate vocational training in its educational program. Children will get the opportunity to integrate a VTC direction in their study from 12 years onwards. These children, when they leave this school, will be ready to get a job.
